Bienvenidos a nuestro primer blog!
Bienvenidos a éste primer blog de Armadillo Producciones escrito para el 'lanzamiento' oficial del sitio web de El Eco del Dolor de Mucha Gente y en coordinación con una semana de eventos en el país Vasco en el norte de España.
Nos llevó varios meses organizar el material que incluímos en éste sitio que hacemos público hoy, pero estamos satisfechos con los resultados y esperamos que sea un espacio útil para todos los interesados en los temas tocados en el documental.
La finalización del sitio web, coincidió con una invitación a participar en una serie de actividades organizadas por Lagun Artean - Entre Amigos, de Bilbao (www.la-ea.org) bajo el tema 'Mujeres: voces que reclaman justicia'.
Estos eventos nos dieron la oportunidad de llevar al público del norte de España la temática y la historia de lo sucedido durante el conflicto armado en Guatemala entre 1960 y 1996.
Lagun Artean - Entre Amigos es una ONG que trabaja con proyectos de cooperación y becas estudiantiles en Guatemala con base en Bilbao. Christian Rodríguez es su presidente.

Del 20 al 26 de Marzo el equipo de Armadillo Producciones (Ana Lucía Cuevas y Fred Coker) se unió a ésta serie de actividades y desde varias partes del mundo también también llegaron: Lucía Pinto (guatemalteca, escritora, poetísa, experta en educación y organizadora de varios proyectos vinculados con Guatemala)

Durante el transcurso de una hora, James Rodrígues, Lucía Pinto y Ana Lucía Cuevas conversaron con Colette - presentadora de la radio - sobre sus experiencias creativas en poesía, producción de videos y fotografía, todo ésto enmarcado dentro de los procesos reinvindicativos de la mujer guatemalteca.
Welcome to our very first blog!
Welcome to the very first blog from Armadillo Productions, written in conjunction with the official launch of The Echo of Pain of the Many website, and a week-long series of events in the Basque region of northern Spain.
It's been a long process, compiling the comprehensive resources, and presenting them in a fashion we felt was accessible. But now we're pleased with the results, and hope that it will be a useful resource for all those interested in the issues and content of our documentary.
We were happy to be invited to participate in the 'Mujeres: voces que reclaman justicia ('Women: Voices Reclaiming Justice') series of events in Bilbao, Spain this past week, organised by the NGO Legun Artean (www.la-ea.org). This was an opportunity to bring to a public in northern Spain the issues arising from both the historical events, and the legacy of the armed conflict in Guatemala (1960-96).
Lagun Artean - Entre Amigos is a Bilbao-based NGO which works on development projects, and provides scholarships in Guatemala. Its Director is Christian Rodríquez.

From 20 -26 March the Armadillo team (Ana Lucia Cuevas and Fred Coker ) took part in this series of activities, alongside contributors from various parts of the world , including:
Lucia Pinto (Guatemalan writer, poet , educational expert and organizer of several projects associated with Guatemala) ;
Jean Marie Simon (Washington DC-based lawyer, teacher, photographer and writer) (You can see her page here); and James Rodriguez ( Mexican

Interviews at radio candela
Our first stop was on March 21, with an hour-long radio interview on Radio Candela - Bizkaia . James Rodrigues, Ana Lucía Cuevas and Lucía Pinto discussed, with Candela's presenter Colette, their respective and diverse creative experiences (writing poetry, video production and photography), all this framed within processes through which Guatemalan women are 'reclaiming' justice.

Noche de poesía e inauguración de exposición fotográfica
Ese mismo día por la noche, continuamos en Hika Ateneo con Lucía Pinto. Lucía nos acercó a la poesía de varias guatemaltecas así como a la suya misma y escuchamos una seleción emotiva y elocuente de poemas femeninos que expresan sus experiencias personales y colectivas en Guatemala..
En la exibición fotográfica de Jean-Marie Simon, quien trabajó en Guatemala durante un período de 8 años desde 1980, la gente de Bilbao tubo la oportunidad de ver y reflexionar sobre las experiencias y la represión que el pueblo de Guatemala sufrió durante el conflicto armado.
Jean-Marie está por finalizar y publicar la 4ta edición de su aclamado libro "Eterna Primavera, Eterna Tiranía" en una edición extraordinaria digital en iTunes.
Junto a las fotos de Jean-Marie, se exibieron también las fotografías del mexicano James Rodríguez.
James vive actualmente en Guatemala y ha documentado entre otras cosas las luchas reinvindicativas del pueblo indígena y la lucha de diferentes comunidades contra la expropiación de sus tierras por las corporaciones multinacionales mineras que 'invaden' Guatemala con la aprobación del actual gobierno de Otto Pérez Molina.
OPENING NIGHT: POETRY AND PHOTO EXHIBITION
That same day in the evening, we travelled across the city to a small cultural centre, Hika Ateneo. Lucia Pinto read both a selection of her own poems, and those of other Guatemalan women who have expressed in verse their personal experiences, and those of whole communities in Guatemala.
The same venue was hosting a photographic exhibition by Jean-Marie Simon, who worked in Guatemala over a period of 8 years from 1980. The people of Bilbao were given space to reflect on the experience of the war waged by the Guatemalan government against its own people, opposing the foreign intervention and the subsequent repression. Jean-Marie, from the USA, was also launching he 4th and electronic version of her acclaimed book, Guatemala: Eternal Spring, Eternal Tyranny.
Jean-Marie's work was complemented by an exhibition of some of the recent work by the well-known Mexican photographer, James Rodriguez. James has based himself in Guatemala over the past few years, and has, in particular, documented the struggles of indigenous and peasant communities fighting against the expropriation of their lands by multinational mining corporations working in collusion with the current government of Otto Perez Molina.

We were very lucky that our screening 'coincided' with the exhibitions and visits of Jean-Marie and James (whose photographs provided essential material for The Echo, and whose profiles appear on this website), so we decided to interview them.

In the evening of that same day at 'Las Cruces's cultural centre, Barakaldo, we held the 'official' launch of the website, which was followed by a ' guided tour' of his photo exhibition " The New Mayan Era ", by James Rodriguez.
At Armadillo Productions, we thought it a perfect event to 'go public' with our new resource-based website, www.elecodeldolor.com , which takes the issues and content of our documentary as a starting point. As readers of the blog will find, the film is now freely available on the site, in both Spanish and English versions, and either in its entirety or as a series of 9 separate chapters.
The site also provides links to the work of and resources available from the various human rights' defenders, photographers, musicians, and Latin American-focused organisations who were a great support for making of The Eco of Pain of the Many.

Proyección de El Eco del Dolor de Mucha Gente
Como culminación de nuestra estancia en Bilbao , la película se proyectó en un gran lugar: Bilborock. Ana Lucía estuvo acompañada por Jean Marie Simon , juntas abordaron las preguntas que surgieron de la película y temas alrededor de las luchas actuales contra la impunidad y por la justicia en Guatemala.
La semana de eventos organizada por el equipo de Lagun Artean Entreamigos, fué una interesante mezcla de exposiciones públicas en lugares variados, programas de radio y la proyección de la película, cada evento con su propio carácter, informando a una variada gama de audiencias .
Por todo éste esfuerzo Armadillo Producciones ha quedado muy agradecida.
Screening of The Echo of Pain of the Many
In Bilbao, as a culmination of our stay, the film was screened at a great venue, Bilborock, where Lucia was joined by Jean- Marie Simon, addressing the issues of the film, and the ongoing struggles against impunity and for justice by the individuals and communities who were victims of the ruthless repression by the Guatemalan state under successive regimes.
Finally, in terms of 'getting a message out,' the week provided an interesting mix of public exhibitions in a range of venues, radio broadcasts and the film screening, each having its own character, and capacity to inform and engage with a range of audiences.
